Your personality card describes how you come across: your style, your talents and the habits other people notice first. Your soul card describes the aim underneath, the lesson your life keeps coming back to. Both come from one sum in Mary K. Greer’s birth card method. The personality card is that total reduced to 22 or less, and the soul card is the same number reduced to a single digit.
If you’d rather skip the arithmetic, the tarot birth card calculator shows both cards with the working.
Personality card vs soul card at a glance
| Personality card | Soul card | |
|---|---|---|
| How it’s found | Month + day + year, digits added, reduced to 22 or less | Personality number reduced to one digit |
| Possible cards | 2 to 22 (never the Magician, and the High Priestess only for a total of exactly 2000) | 1 to 9 (The Magician to The Hermit) |
| What it describes | Style, temperament, visible gifts, typical overreach | Inner motive, long-term purpose, what feels worth doing |
| Who notices it | Other people, often before you do | Mostly you, and mostly over time |
| How many people share it | Everyone with the same personality number | Everyone in your constellation |
A simple way to hold the difference: the personality card is the answer to “What are you like?” and the soul card is the answer to “What are you for?”
How do you find your personality and soul cards?
Greer set out the method in Tarot for Your Self (1984) and expanded it in Who Are You in the Tarot? (2011).
- Add your birth month, day and year as whole numbers.
- Add the digits of that total.
- If the result is over 22, add its digits again. This is your personality card.
- Reduce the personality number to one digit. This is your soul card.
Example with two cards: April 13, 1975
4 + 13 + 1975 = 1992. Then 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, which is The World. Reduce again: 2 + 1 = 3, The Empress. Personality card: The World. Soul card: The Empress.
Example with one card: July 4, 1976
7 + 4 + 1976 = 1987. Then 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 25, which is over 22, so 2 + 5 = 7, The Chariot. Seven is already one digit, so the Chariot is both the personality and the soul card.
Example with three cards: June 15, 1960
6 + 15 + 1960 = 1981. Then 1 + 9 + 8 + 1 = 19, The Sun. Reduce to 1 + 9 = 10, Wheel of Fortune, and then 1 + 0 = 1, The Magician. Greer counts all three as birth cards. Most readers treat the Sun as the outer personality, the Magician as the soul, and the Wheel as the step that links them.
Every personality and soul pair that can occur
Because the soul card is always the root of the personality card, only these combinations exist:
| Personality | Soul |
|---|---|
| 2 to 9 | Same card (2 only when the total is exactly 2000) |
| 10 Wheel of Fortune | 1 Magician |
| 11 Justice | 2 High Priestess |
| 12 Hanged Man | 3 Empress |
| 13 Death | 4 Emperor |
| 14 Temperance | 5 Hierophant |
| 15 Devil | 6 Lovers |
| 16 Tower | 7 Chariot |
| 17 Star | 8 Strength |
| 18 Moon | 9 Hermit |
| 19 Sun | 1 Magician (through 10 Wheel) |
| 20 Judgement | 2 High Priestess |
| 21 World | 3 Empress |
| 22 Fool | 4 Emperor |
Each pair sits inside one of the nine constellations, the card families that share a root number.
Cards 10 to 22 can only ever be personality cards, because they always reduce to something smaller. The Magician is never a personality card, since no month + day + year total has digits that add to 1, so it only appears as the soul card under 10 or 19. Each pair has its own write-up in the birth cards library, for example Temperance and The Hierophant.
What does your personality card describe?
Think of the personality card as your default setting. It covers three things:
- Natural gifts. The Magician’s quick skill, the Empress’s warmth, the Chariot’s drive.
- Characteristic style. How you tend to walk into a room, start a project or handle a problem.
- Typical overreach. Every card has a shadow when pushed too far. Justice can turn rigid, the Star can drift into wishful thinking, and the Devil’s appetite can become compulsion.
People usually recognize their personality card quickly, sometimes with a wince. Friends often recognize it even faster.
What does your soul card describe?
The soul card works one layer down. Because it is always one of the first nine Major Arcana, it names a broad, foundational aim:
| Soul card | Core theme |
|---|---|
| 1 Magician | Using will and skill to make things real |
| 2 High Priestess | Trusting intuition and inner knowing |
| 3 Empress | Creating, nurturing, enjoying |
| 4 Emperor | Building structures and taking responsibility |
| 5 Hierophant | Teaching, learning, passing meaning on |
| 6 Lovers | Choosing by your values, and relationship |
| 7 Chariot | Directing effort toward a goal |
| 8 Strength | Gentle courage and mastery of instinct |
| 9 Hermit | Seeking truth and sharing it |
The soul card often appears as the thing that makes an effort feel worthwhile. A person with a Devil personality and a Lovers soul card may find that every hard lesson about attachment leads back to one question: what do I value?
How do you read the two cards together?
A useful frame is surface and source. The personality card is how the soul card’s aim gets expressed in this particular life. Some common pairs:
- Death and The Emperor (13/4). Clearing away what no longer works so you can build something that lasts.
- The Star and Strength (17/8). Hope and openness resting on steady courage.
- The Moon and The Hermit (18/9). Comfort with uncertainty in service of a long inner search.
- Judgement and The High Priestess (20/2). A public call to act, rooted in private listening.
Sometimes the cards seem to pull against each other, as with the Fool’s freedom against the Emperor’s order. Readers usually treat that friction as the main lesson of the pair. The question becomes how each card can serve the other.
A quick exercise
Write one line for each card: “People see me as…” for the personality card and “What matters most to me is…” for the soul card. Then pick a recent decision and ask which card was driving it. If the answer is always the personality card, the soul card is probably the one asking for more attention.
Why the balance between the cards shifts with age
Readers who have worked with birth cards for years often describe a gradual change of emphasis. In youth the personality card tends to lead. It is what others notice and what you lean on. Later, the soul card’s question comes forward.
Someone with Judgement as a personality card might spend their twenties answering calls and taking big public steps. In later decades they may find that the thread running through it all was the High Priestess: learning to trust the inner voice that prompted those steps.
None of this runs on a fixed timetable. Treat it as a prompt: if your personality card fits less well than it once did, look at your soul card and ask whether you’ve been growing toward it. Your tarot year card can help here, since years whose card falls in your own constellation are often read as chances to work on these themes directly.
What if two calculators give you different cards?
Some sites add all eight digits of the date, and some split the year into two parts. These methods can change the personality card, but they never change the soul card. Take April 13, 1975 again:
| Method | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Whole numbers (Greer, this site) | 4 + 13 + 1975 = 1992, then 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21 | World / Empress |
| All eight digits | 0 + 4 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 7 + 5 = 30, then 3 + 0 = 3 | Empress only |
| Four parts | 4 + 13 + 19 + 75 = 111, then 1 + 1 + 1 = 3 | Empress only |
The soul card is the Empress every time. So if one site gives you the Star and another gives Strength, your soul card is Strength either way. The guide to calculator differences shows why the root always survives.
When you have your pair, How to Work With Your Birth Card has prompts and a spread built around both cards, and Tarot Constellations and Hidden Factor Cards covers the rest of your card family. You can check any date again with the birth card calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Which is more important, the personality card or the soul card?
Neither outranks the other. The personality card is usually easier to spot because it describes visible behavior and talents. The soul card works in the background and often feels truer as you get older. Most people recognize their personality card first and grow into the soul card later, so give both a fair hearing before deciding one fits better.
Can my personality card change during my life?
No. Both birth cards come from your birth date, so they stay the same for life. What changes is how you live them: a young Chariot may be all speed, an older one more about steering. The card that does change every year is your tarot year card, which uses your birth month and day with the current year.
Is the soul card the same as the soul urge number in numerology?
No. The soul urge number comes from the vowels in your name, while the tarot soul card comes from your birth date. Readers sometimes compare them because both describe inner motivation more than outward behavior. If you use both, look for overlap between the soul card's theme and the soul urge meaning in the numerology calculator.
Do two people with the same soul card get on better?
They often recognize each other quickly, because a shared soul card means you belong to the same constellation and care about the same core lesson. That can make for easy understanding, and also for shared blind spots. Treat it as a point of connection to talk about, not as a compatibility score.
