Birth cards 14 / 5

Temperance & The Hierophant

If your tarot birth cards are Temperance and the Hierophant, your personality card is 14 and your soul card is 5. Temperance is your everyday style: calm, adaptable and good at finding the middle way. The Hierophant is what you are working toward underneath: meaning, teaching and values worth passing on. People with this pair often end up as mediators and mentors, bringing different people or ideas together into something that works. The question running through the pair is how to respect tradition without going rigid, and how to blend without losing your own center.

How you get this pair

Add the month, day and full year, then add the digits. For December 28, 1999: 12 + 28 + 1999 = 2039, and 2 + 0 + 3 + 9 = 14, Temperance, your personality card. Then 1 + 4 = 5 gives the Hierophant, your soul card.

The pair appears for people born from 1996 onward and for people born before 1939. Nobody born from 1939 to 1995 gets it under Greer's method.

How the cards work together

Temperance shows a winged angel pouring liquid between two cups, one foot on land and one in a pool. The picture is about mixing things in the right proportions and taking the time to get it right. The Hierophant sits between two pillars, raising a hand in blessing over two students, with crossed keys at his feet. He stands for teaching, ritual and what a community hands down.

With Temperance as your personality, you may seem hard to rattle. You can usually see what each side of an argument needs, and you may mix influences freely: different cultures, disciplines, faiths or styles. The Hierophant soul gives that blending a purpose. You are drawn to questions of meaning and to deciding what is worth keeping and teaching. Teaching, formal or informal, is a common thread, and Temperance keeps your teaching unusually open-minded.

Out of balance, the pair can look like a peacekeeper who never takes a stand, or someone who defers to authority against their own judgment. In balance, Temperance tests tradition against real experience, and the Hierophant gives the blending a backbone of values.

  • Keeping inherited beliefs without examining them

Temperance & The Hierophant in love

You tend to be steady, considerate and committed. Temperance brings patience and a willingness to adjust; the Hierophant values loyalty, shared rituals and often a formal commitment. Meeting the family, keeping anniversaries and building traditions as a couple may matter to you more than to most.

Shared values matter more to you than shared backgrounds. The pitfall is keeping the peace at your own expense, fading into whatever a partner wants. Saying where you stand, kindly and clearly, keeps the balance fair on both sides.

Temperance & The Hierophant at work

Teaching, mentoring and work that blends fields suit you: education, coaching, chaplaincy, healthcare, counseling, mediation, HR, nonprofit leadership and cultural work. Temperance also likes precise processes, so pharmacy, nutrition, lab work or crafts that depend on careful mixing can appeal.

The Hierophant may draw you to established institutions and professions with clear codes of conduct. The caution is staying too long in a hierarchy that no longer matches your values. Ask from time to time whether you are serving the institution or the purpose it was built for.

Hidden factor cards

You have no hidden factor card. Your constellation is just 5 and 14, because the next number that reduces to 5 would be 23, and the Major Arcana stop at 22. With both members already in your pair, nothing in the group is held back. In practice, the lessons come from the conversation between Temperance and the Hierophant themselves: when to adapt, and when to hold to a principle. More on these closed groups in constellations and hidden factor cards.

Growing with this pair

Make a list of your non-negotiables, a short set of values you will not trade away. With those clear, Temperance can adapt freely on everything else.

Then examine one inherited belief at a time. Take a rule you live by, trace where it came from, and decide whether it still fits. That turns the Hierophant from obedience into chosen wisdom. Allow yourself pleasure without moderation guilt, too; balance includes enjoyment. Many people with this pair feel most at home when they are teaching or mentoring someone.

Questions to journal on

  1. Where am I staying in the middle to avoid conflict rather than because it is fair?
  2. Which beliefs did I inherit, and which have I chosen?
  3. Who taught me something that changed my life, and what would I want to pass on?
  4. What would balance look like if it included more enjoyment?

Frequently asked questions

Why don't Temperance and the Hierophant have a hidden factor card?

Hidden factor cards come from your constellation, the group of Major Arcana numbers with the same root. The 5 group holds only 5 and 14, because there is no card 23. Both members are already your personality and soul cards, so there is nothing left to be hidden.

Another calculator says my only card is the Hierophant. Which is right?

Both methods are in use. Greer adds month, day and full year; other sites add month, day and the two halves of the year. For about a third of the dates Greer places at Temperance between 1900 and 2030, that second method lands straight on 5. We use Greer's because the personality and soul card system comes from her work. The trade-offs are set out in why arcana calculators disagree.
