How you get this pair
Add the month, day and full year, then add the digits. For April 6, 1970: 4 + 6 + 1970 = 1980, and 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18, the Moon, your personality card. Then 1 + 8 = 9 gives the Hermit, your soul card.
Anyone born from 1979 to 2035 has a month, day and year total between 1981 and 2078, and none of those totals has digits adding to 18.

How the cards work together
The Moon shows a path leading from a pool, where a crayfish crawls out, past a dog and a wolf howling at the sky, between two towers and on toward distant hills. Everything is half-seen. The Hermit stands alone on a snowy peak holding a lantern with a six-pointed star inside. He has climbed above the confusion and carries his own light.
The pairing tells a clear story. With the Moon as your personality, you may have vivid dreams, strong hunches, shifting moods and a rich imagination. You may also go through foggy periods when old fears rise up like the crayfish from the pool. The Hermit soul answers what the Moon is searching for: a lantern you carry yourself. Your deeper purpose involves seeking your own truth, often through solitude, study or contemplation, and then passing it on to whoever climbs after you.
In balance, the pair is a guide who has walked through uncertainty and can light the way for others. Out of balance, the Moon turns to anxiety or self-deception and the Hermit to isolation. You need regular solitude to process what the Moon stirs up, and enough connection that what you learn does not stay locked on the mountain.

The Moon & The Hermit in love
You bring depth, sensitivity and loyalty, along with a real need for space. The Moon picks up a partner's moods quickly; the Hermit needs time alone to recharge. You do best with someone who does not take your solitude personally.
You take time to trust, and you may test whether a feeling about someone is intuition or fear. Sharing your inner world, even in small pieces, helps a partner understand you. Shared silence, late conversations and room to say nothing together tend to suit this pair.
The Moon & The Hermit at work
Work that draws on intuition, research or long solitary focus suits you: writing, art, music, film, psychology, research, archives and libraries, philosophy, spiritual direction, scientific fieldwork, and data or software work done independently. The Hermit makes a fine specialist or mentor, valued for depth more than visibility.
The Moon may draw you toward the hidden or unknown, such as investigation or depth psychology. The cautions are isolation and chaotic workplaces. Clear structures, a few trusted colleagues and protected time for focused work help this pair do its best.
Hidden factor cards
You have no hidden factor card. Your constellation is just 9 and 18; the next number that reduces to 9 would be 27, past the 22 Major Arcana. The two cards complete each other: the Hermit's lantern lights the Moon's path, and the Moon keeps the Hermit in touch with feeling and imagination. The card for each year of your life brings in other influences, changing every birthday. Tarot constellations explains why some groups have no hidden factor card.
Growing with this pair
Keep a dream or hunch journal. Note what you sensed and check back a month later. Over time you learn which feelings prove reliable and which come from fear.
Plan your solitude. Book regular time alone before you are overwhelmed, so the Hermit's retreat restores you instead of rescuing you. Then share what you learn. The Hermit holds the lantern up for a reason, and teaching, writing or mentoring lets your hard-won insight reach someone who needs it. For more practice, see how to work with your birth card.

Frequently asked questions
Why don't people born after 1978 get the Moon and the Hermit?
A personality card of 18 needs a total with digits adding to exactly 18, such as 1980 or 2079. Anyone born from 1979 to 2035 has a total between 1981 and 2078, and none of those adds to 18. Younger people can still meet the Moon through their arcana number, which adds all eight digits of the date.
Why does another calculator give me only the Hermit?
Some sites add month, day and the two halves of the year. For most dates Greer's method takes to 18, that method lands straight on 9; across 1900 to 2030 the two agree on the Moon less than one time in six. Why calculators disagree covers both methods.
