Birth cards 17 / 8

The Star & Strength

If your tarot birth cards are the Star and Strength, your personality card is 17 and your soul card is 8. The Star is what people see: openness, hope and a calming presence. Strength is the purpose underneath: courage that works through patience rather than force. People with this pair are often resilient in an unshowy way, the person who keeps faith after a hard year and helps others find theirs. Greer's system uses Rider-Waite-Smith numbering, where Strength is 8 (see Strength 8 or Justice 11). Under her method, this pair belongs to people born in 1968 or earlier, and to children born from 2026 on.

How you get this pair

Add the month, day and full year, then add the digits. For February 12, 1956: 2 + 12 + 1956 = 1970, and 1 + 9 + 7 + 0 = 17, the Star, your personality card. Then 1 + 7 = 8 gives Strength, your soul card.

The same total of 1970 comes from many birthdays in the 1950s and 1960s, and totals such as 2069 bring the pair back for babies born from 2026.

If you only know your birthday, work out your birth cards first. The method we use is Mary K. Greer’s.

How the cards work together

The Star comes right after the Tower in the Major Arcana, and its picture shows why. A woman kneels by a pool under one large star and seven small ones, pouring water onto the land and back into the pool. Nothing is hidden and nothing is defended; it is renewal after upheaval. Strength shows a woman calmly holding a lion's jaws, with an infinity sign above her head. Her power is patience and kindness.

With the Star as your personality, people may feel lighter around you or come to you for encouragement. You may carry a strong sense of a larger purpose and an ability to imagine a better future. The Strength soul supplies the inner discipline that keeps that hope grounded. Your private work is taming your own lion, whether that is fear, anger, appetite or self-doubt, with compassion instead of force.

Together the cards suggest a healer's temperament: the Star gives freely and Strength holds steady. The pair struggles when openness leaves you giving without refilling, or when Strength becomes silent endurance. Hope backed by daily habits, and courage that includes letting people see you struggle, keep it healthy.

Strengths

  • Hope that carries other people through hard times
  • Calm, patient courage under pressure
  • Compassion for people and animals
  • Healing and recovering after setbacks
  • A lack of pretense

Watch out for

  • Idealism that ignores practical limits
  • Enduring silently instead of asking for help
  • Giving until you are depleted
  • Pushing down anger or fear instead of working with it
  • Disappointment when the world falls short of your vision

The Star & Strength in love

You bring warmth, patience and loyalty. The Star sees the best in a partner and the Strength soul stays calm in a conflict. You may be the one who keeps believing in the relationship through a rough patch.

Watch for idealizing a partner, or putting up with too much and calling it patience. Strength includes knowing your limits. Relationships thrive when you share your own fears and needs as openly as you offer support, and when your partner encourages you back.

The Star & Strength at work

Healing, creative and encouraging work suits you: nursing, therapy, coaching, social work, veterinary care, animal training, environmental work, art, music and community organizing. Calm leadership in hard times is a real strength, in roles such as crisis support.

The Star also likes an audience, so creative work that reaches people can appeal. The caution is compassion fatigue. Build recovery time into demanding care work, and choose places where your idealism is supported rather than used up.

Hidden factor cards

You have no hidden factor card. Your constellation is just 8 and 17, because the next number that reduces to 8 would be 26, past the end of the Major Arcana. The two cards feed each other: Strength keeps the Star's hope from floating away, and the Star keeps Strength's endurance from turning grim. Your tarot year cards bring other influences in from year to year. The constellations and hidden factor cards guide covers the other groups.

Growing with this pair

Give the Star a daily refill: a walk, ten minutes off your phone, or three lines about something you are looking forward to. Hope responds to regular practice more than to big moments.

Then check in with yourself. Strength can hide a struggle behind calm, so tell one trusted person about one real difficulty each week. Finally, work with your lion. Notice which emotion you usually suppress and give it a safe outlet, such as exercise, art or a frank conversation. Working with your birth card has more ideas.

Questions to journal on

  1. What renews my sense of hope, and how often do I make time for it?
  2. Which emotion is my lion, and how do I usually handle it?
  3. Where am I enduring something silently when I could ask for support?
  4. What future am I imagining, and what small step brings it closer this week?

Frequently asked questions

I use a Marseille deck where Strength is 11. Does this pair change?

Greer's system follows Rider-Waite-Smith numbering, where Strength is 8, so a soul number of 8 means Strength. If you read with Marseille numbering, 8 becomes Justice and the pair becomes the Star and Justice. Both choices are used by practitioners.

Why does another calculator say my only card is Strength?

Some sites add month, day and the two halves of the year. For dates Greer's method takes to 17, that method usually lands straight on 8; across 1900 to 2030 it agrees with Greer less than one time in five. See why your result can differ between sites.
