How you get this pair
Add the month, day and full year, then add the digits. For January 7, 1985: 1 + 7 + 1985 = 1993, and 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 22. Card 22 is the Fool, printed as 0, so the Fool is your personality card. Then 2 + 2 = 4 gives the Emperor, your soul card.
From 1992 onward, birthday totals no longer reach a digit sum of exactly 22.

How the cards work together
The Fool steps toward a cliff edge with his face to the sky, a small bundle on his shoulder, a white rose in his hand and a little dog at his heels. He is beginnings, trust and openness. The Emperor sits on a stone throne carved with rams' heads, armored under his robes, in front of bare mountains. He is order, responsibility and the capacity to build.
With the Fool as your personality, you may seem spontaneous, curious and unconventional. You might change direction suddenly, take risks others would not, and stay unusually open to learning at any age. The Emperor soul tells a different story about what you want underneath: mastery, structure and the security of something you have built yourself, whether a business, a household, a body of expertise or your own set of rules.
In balance, the Fool gives the courage to start and the Emperor the discipline to finish and maintain, which makes this a pair of founders. Out of balance, the Fool avoids commitment and drifts, and the Emperor turns controlling to cover the insecurity. Structures loose enough for adventure, and adventures grounded enough to lead somewhere, suit you best.

The Fool & The Emperor in love
You tend to mix playfulness with protectiveness. The Fool brings fun and spontaneity; the Emperor wants stability, commitment and to provide for the people it loves. You may want freedom early in a relationship and security as it deepens.
Tell a partner about both needs so neither side of you comes as a surprise. The shadow is control, the Emperor organizing a partner's life. Relationships thrive with a solid shared base, such as agreed values and a home, plus regular adventures and room for each person to grow.
The Fool & The Emperor at work
Pioneering work suits you: founding businesses, leading new initiatives, consulting, travel and adventure work, field roles, start-up management, architecture and engineering. The best fits begin in unknown territory and then need systems built, so the Fool's appetite for novelty meets the Emperor's organizing skill.
Bold career changes are common with this pair, often followed by a quick rise in the new field. The caution is boredom once things are running. Bring in partners who enjoy maintenance, or reshape your role so every phase holds some fresh challenge.
Hidden factor cards
Your constellation is 4-13-22, and the member you do not hold is Death (13). In Greer's framework this hidden factor card is a quality you tend to meet through experience before you claim it. For Fool and Emperor people, Death teaches the art of ending well: closing one chapter fully before leaping into the next, and letting go of structures that have done their job. It often appears at major transitions. See Death for the card itself, and how tarot constellations work for the 4-13-22 group.
Growing with this pair
Build a flexible framework: a few firm commitments, such as health routines, money habits and core relationships, with plenty of open space around them. That gives the Emperor security and leaves the Fool room to roam.
Finish with intention. Before the next adventure, close the last one properly, which is your hidden Death card's lesson. And notice when the urge to control rises. It usually means the Fool feels unsafe, and a small chosen risk often restores balance faster than tighter rules. The guide to the Fool's Journey shows where both cards sit in the Major Arcana story.
Questions to journal on
- Where do I need more freedom, and where do I need more structure?
- What have I started that deserves to be finished or properly closed?
- When do I reach for control, and what am I afraid of in those moments?
- What new beginning am I ready for once I have made space for it?
Frequently asked questions
Why is the Fool 22 in birth card sums if the card says 0?
The Fool is printed as 0 in most modern decks, but there are 22 Major Arcana cards and the Fool can sit at either end of the sequence. Greer's system counts it as 22 so that a total of 22 has a card, and 22 reduces to 4, the Emperor. The card's meaning is the same either way.
Another calculator says I am Death and the Emperor. Which is right?
Some sites add month, day and the two halves of the year. Across every date from 1900 to 2030, that method never returns 22 for people Greer places at the Fool; about seven in ten get 13 and the rest get the Emperor alone. January 7, 1985 gives 1 + 7 + 19 + 85 = 112, which reduces to 4. Both cards share the 4-13-22 constellation. More on the two methods in why birth card calculators differ.
Can people born after 1991 have the Fool as a birth card?
Not under Greer's method. A personality of 22 needs a total whose digits add to 22, such as 1993. From 1992, totals start at 1994, and the next one with a digit sum of 22 is 2299. Younger people can still reach the Fool through the arcana number calculator, which adds all eight digits of the date.
