What this numerology calculator shows you

A numerology chart turns two things you were given at birth, your name and your date of birth, into a handful of numbers. Each number looks at a different side of you. This free numerology calculator works out the six core numbers of the Pythagorean system, the one most Western numerologists use, flags any master numbers and karmic debt numbers, and adds your personal year. Every result shows the sum it came from, so you can check it by hand.

The six core numbers

NumberComes fromWhat it describes
Life pathYour full date of birthThe main direction of your life. The most important number in the chart.
Expression (destiny)Every letter of your birth nameNatural talents and the way you tend to get things done.
Soul urge (heart's desire)The vowels in your nameWhat you want deep down, often in private.
PersonalityThe consonants in your nameThe first impression you give people.
BirthdayThe day of the month you were bornOne specific gift.
MaturityLife path + expressionWhere life tends to lead from around your forties.

On top of these, your personal year number changes every January 1 and describes the theme of the current year in a nine-year cycle.

How to calculate your numerology numbers

This whole chart is worked by hand for Alex Morgan, born March 15, 1990, so you can see where each number comes from.

  1. Life path: reduce the day, month and year separately. Day 15 → 1 + 5 = 6. Month 3. Year 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1. Then 6 + 3 + 1 = 10 → 1. Life path 1.
  2. Expression: A1 + L3 + E5 + X6 + M4 + O6 + R9 + G7 + A1 + N5 = 47 → 4 + 7 = 11. A master number, so it stays 11 (written 47/11).
  3. Soul urge: the vowels only. A1 + E5 + O6 + A1 = 13 → 4. Because the total passed through 13 before reducing, this chart also carries karmic debt 13.
  4. Personality: the consonants. L3 + X6 + M4 + R9 + G7 + N5 = 34 → 7.
  5. Birthday: 15 → 6.
  6. Maturity: life path 1 + expression 11 = 12 → 3.

Put together: a 1 (independent, self-starting) with an 11 set of talents (intuitive, inspiring), a private wish for stability (4) and a reserved first impression (7). A chart gives you several layers like these, and they sometimes pull against each other.

The Pythagorean letter chart

Each letter takes the number of its column. A, E, I, O and U count as vowels for the soul urge. Every other letter, including Y, counts as a consonant, unless your name has no other vowel (Lynn, Glyn), when Y counts as the vowel. Accents are ignored, so É counts as E. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes don't count.

Which name to use

Traditional numerology uses your full birth name, as written on your birth certificate, middle names included. That's the version people treat as your blueprint. If you've changed your name through marriage, a nickname or a stage name, run that as a second chart and compare: the differences usually say something about how you've chosen to present yourself.

How to read your numbers together

  • Start with the life path. It sets the main theme. Read the other numbers as detail on top of it.
  • Look for repeats. If the same number turns up twice, its qualities are stronger in you.
  • Notice the tensions. A soul urge of 4 (security) next to a life path of 5 (freedom) describes a tug-of-war many people recognize in themselves.
  • Watch for 11, 22, 33 and 13, 14, 16, 19. The first three are master numbers, kept whole instead of reduced. The others are karmic debt numbers, which the karmic debt calculator explains in more detail. Your result flags both.
  • Treat it as a mirror, not a verdict. Numerology is a reflective tradition, not a science. Use what's useful.

Numerology numbers and their tarot cards

Each number from 1 to 9 matches the Major Arcana card with the same number: 1 is The Magician, 2 The High Priestess, and so on to 9, The Hermit. Master number 11 goes with Justice, 22 with The Fool (card 22 in tarot sums) and 33 with The Lovers (3 + 3 = 6). For the tarot version of your birth date, which keeps all 22 cards in play, use the arcana calculator, or read arcana number vs life path number to see how the two compare.

Is Y a vowel or a consonant in numerology?

Traditions disagree. Some count Y as a vowel when it sounds like one (as in "Lynn"), others always treat it as a consonant. This calculator counts Y as a consonant, with one exception: in a name with no A, E, I, O or U (such as Lynn or Glyn), Y is the only vowel sound, so it counts as a vowel. If your name has a vowel-sounding Y next to other vowels, your soul urge and personality numbers may differ from a site that treats Y as a vowel.

Does this use Pythagorean or Chaldean numerology?

Pythagorean, the system most Western books and apps use. It gives the letters values 1 to 9 in alphabet order. Chaldean numerology uses a different table that runs 1 to 8, often reads the name you use day to day rather than your birth name, and gives different name numbers. Your life path is the same in both, because it comes from your birth date.

Is the expression number the same as the destiny number?

Yes. Both names describe the same number, the total of every letter in your full birth name. Older books tend to say destiny number; most modern ones say expression. Some writers also use destiny for the life path, so check how a source defines it before comparing results.

Can my numerology numbers change?

Your life path, birthday and maturity numbers never change, because they come from your birth date. The name numbers can: if you change or shorten your name, the new name gives new expression, soul urge and personality numbers. Numerologists usually read the birth name as the foundation and the new name as a layer on top.

Why do numerology calculators give different results?

The arithmetic itself is fixed, so differences come from choices. The common ones are whether Y counts as a vowel, whether master numbers are kept or reduced, which name is entered, and whether the life path is reduced in parts or all at once. This calculator shows every step, so you can see which choice was made.

My name has letters like ø, ß or æ. How are they counted?

Accented letters count as their plain letter, so É is E and Ñ is N. Letters such as ø, æ, œ and ß are scored as their usual English spelling (o, ae, oe, ss). Letters from other scripts, such as Cyrillic or Greek, can’t be scored: the result lists any it skipped, so enter a Latin spelling instead, such as the one in your passport.
