The 22 Major Arcana cards

The Major Arcana are the tarot’s trump cards, numbered 0 to 21, and each one has its own name and picture rather than a suit. In a reading they mark the big themes and turning points. Read in order, they tell a story known as the Fool’s Journey: The Fool sets out with nothing, meets teachers and tests, falls at The Tower, finds hope again with The Star and arrives at The World.

The Fool tarot card 0 · The traveler The Fool New beginnings. Many readers lay out the other 21 cards in three rows of seven, as the stages the Fool passes through on the way to the World.

Tarot card meanings by question

Most people come to the cards with a question about love, work or what happens next. These are the cards that come up most often for each one, and what they tend to say.

Love and relationships

“Will this relationship work? Is someone new coming?”

Cups lead most love readings, but a few Major Arcana carry just as much weight. A warm card shows connection that is growing; a hard one usually points to something that needs to be said or healed.

Feelings: how do they feel about me?

“What does he or she think of me?”

For feelings questions, look first at Cups and the court cards. A court card often describes how the other person is acting toward you right now, not who they are for good.

Career and money

“Will I get the job? Is money coming?”

Pentacles speak to income, skills and security; Wands to ambition and recognition. Read a hard card here as a warning about pace or workload, not a verdict on your future.

Change and timing

“When will things move? Is a change coming?”

Some cards speed a situation up and others ask you to wait. Wands move fastest and Pentacles slowest, and a few Major Arcana mark a clear turning point.

Are there good and bad tarot cards?

No. Every card has an easy side and a difficult side, and the question you ask shapes which one shows. Still, some cards are reliably bright and a handful have a frightening reputation they don’t fully deserve.

The most positive cards

  • The Star

  • Six of Wands

The cards people worry about most, and what they usually mean:

CardWhat it usually means
DeathAn ending that clears space for something new. It rarely, if ever, means a physical death.
The TowerSudden change or a truth coming out. Hard in the moment, but it removes what was unstable.
The DevilAn attachment, habit or bond that feels hard to leave. The chains on the card are loose.
Ten of SwordsRock bottom. The worst has already happened, and recovery starts from here.
Three of SwordsHeartbreak, grief or painful words. Let the hurt be felt so it can heal.
Nine of SwordsWorry and sleepless nights. The fear is often bigger than the problem itself.
Five of PentaclesMoney worries or feeling left out in the cold. Help is often closer than it seems.
The MoonConfusion and mixed signals. Wait for the facts before you act.

Yes or no cards at a glance

Every card above has a traditional yes or no lean. Across the full deck, read upright:

  • 49lean yes
  • 15say maybe or not yet
  • 14lean no

So a yes is more common than people expect. Reversed cards usually lean one step softer, though some flip toward yes, so check each card’s own page. Swords hold the largest share of the no cards, while Wands, Cups and Pentacles lean clearly yes. For the reasoning behind each Major Arcana answer, see Major Arcana yes or no meanings.

Tarot cards for each zodiac sign

Twelve of the Major Arcana are linked to a zodiac sign through the Golden Dawn system. Your sign’s card describes the energy you share with it.

How to read tarot card meanings

You don’t need to memorize 78 separate meanings. Every card is built from a few simple parts, and once you know them you can read almost any card with confidence.

  1. Start with the arcana. A Major Arcana card points to a big theme or turning point. A Minor Arcana card describes everyday events, feelings and people.
  2. Read the suit next. It tells you which area of life is involved: Wands for action, Cups for feelings, Swords for thoughts and Pentacles for money and work.
  3. Add the number, which shows the stage, from a fresh start with the Ace to completion with the Ten.
  4. Check the direction. An upright card shows the theme flowing freely. A reversed card often shows it blocked, delayed or turned inward.
  5. Look at the position. In a spread, the same card reads differently as the past, the challenge or the outcome. Our tarot spreads explain each position.

PentaclesEarthMoney, work, health, home

What each Minor Arcana number means

The number gives the stage and the suit gives the area of life. So the Five of Cups is loss or upheaval in your feelings, and the Ten of Pentacles is lasting security with money and home. The four court cards often stand for people, or for a way of acting that the situation calls for.

Upright and reversed cards

Not every reader uses reversals. If you do, treat a reversed card as the same energy in a different state: held back, overdone, delayed or happening privately. Reversals add nuance rather than turning every card into its opposite. The guide to reversed tarot cards covers the main methods.

Court cards as people

When a court card appears, ask first whether it could be someone in your life. The suit hints at their temperament (see the suit sections above) and the rank at their age, role or maturity. If no one fits, read it as a way of acting the situation calls for.

RankOften describes
PageA child, a student or someone new to something; also news or a message
KnightA young adult or anyone chasing a goal; also movement, travel or a fast change
QueenA mature, caring person who leads from the inside, often with emotional insight
KingA person in charge or with authority, who directs the suit’s energy outward

Not sure which court card fits you? Try the court card quiz.

When the same card keeps appearing

A card that turns up again and again is usually pointing at a theme you haven’t settled yet. Note the question you asked and what was going on each time it appeared. Patterns appear quickly. The Eight of Cups returning during a job search, for example, often means the question underneath is whether to leave rather than what comes next.

A simple way to learn all 78 cards

  1. Learn the 22 Major Arcana first, in order, as a story. At one a day, that takes about three weeks.
  2. Fix the element and life area of each of the four suits. That one step gives you a starting point for all 56 Minor Arcana.
  3. Learn what Ace to Ten mean as stages, then combine them with each suit.
  4. Treat the court cards as 16 people you might meet, and pair each with someone you know.
  5. Pull a card each morning and check its meaning at night against what happened.

Practice with a reading

The quickest way to learn the cards is to use them. Pull a daily tarot card, ask a yes or no question or try a three-card reading, then compare the cards with the meanings above. For a printable summary of every card, see the tarot cheat sheet.

Tarot card meanings FAQ

How many tarot cards are there?

A standard tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana are split into four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles), each with ten numbered cards from Ace to Ten and four court cards: Page, Knight, Queen and King.

What is the difference between the Major and Minor Arcana?

The Major Arcana describe big life themes and turning points, such as a new beginning, a loss or a major decision. The Minor Arcana describe everyday events, feelings and people. When several Major Arcana cards appear in one reading, the situation is usually more significant than it first looks.

Do I need to learn all 78 meanings to read tarot?

No. Start with the 22 Major Arcana and the four suit themes. Once you know what each suit and number stands for, you can work out the general meaning of any Minor Arcana card and look up the details as you go.

What is the strongest tarot card?

There is no single answer, but some cards carry extra weight. The World and The Sun are the most complete positive cards, The Tower is the most dramatic, and Death is the most misunderstood: it means an ending that clears space for something new, not a literal death.

Which Major Arcana card am I?

Your birth date adds up to one of the 22 Major Arcana. The arcana calculator finds your personal arcana card, and the tarot birth card calculator gives your personality and soul cards.

Why are Strength and Justice numbered differently in some decks?

Older Marseille decks put Justice at 8 and Strength at 11. The Rider-Waite-Smith deck (1909) swapped them, and most modern decks follow it. This site uses Strength 8 and Justice 11. See Strength 8 or Justice 11?.
