What tarot card is my zodiac sign?

Aries is The Emperor, Taurus The Hierophant, Gemini The Lovers, Cancer The Chariot, Leo Strength, Virgo The Hermit, Libra Justice, Scorpio Death, Sagittarius Temperance, Capricorn The Devil, Aquarius The Star and Pisces The Moon. These pairings come from the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and are used in most modern decks, including the Rider-Waite-Smith. The reasoning behind each match is in why each zodiac sign has its tarot card.

All twelve signs at a glance

Besides its own Major Arcana card, each sign borrows the card of its ruling planet. It also governs three numbered Minor Arcana cards, one for each decan (a slice of about ten days). A Leo born on August 5, for example, has Strength as the sign card, The Sun as the planet card and the 6 of Wands for the second decan.

Planet cards follow the traditional rulers the Golden Dawn used (Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius, Jupiter for Pisces). The order gave The Fool to air, The Hanged Man to water and Judgement to fire. Many modern readers link those same cards to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Each sign’s ruling planet has a card too: Mercury The Magician, the Moon The High Priestess, Venus The Empress, Jupiter Wheel of Fortune, Mars The Tower, the Sun The Sun and Saturn The World. Many readers use the sign card for your style and the planet card for the drive behind it. Signs that share a ruler share a planet card, so Aries and Scorpio both have The Tower.

Zodiac card or birth card?

Your zodiac card comes from astrology. Your tarot birth cards come from adding up your birth date. They are separate systems and usually give different cards, so it is worth knowing both.
