In the Golden Dawn system, which most modern tarot decks follow, each zodiac sign has one Major Arcana card: Aries is the Emperor, Taurus the Hierophant, Gemini the Lovers, Cancer the Chariot, Leo Strength, Virgo the Hermit, Libra Justice, Scorpio Death, Sagittarius Temperance, Capricorn the Devil, Aquarius the Star and Pisces the Moon. Your sign also has a ruling planet card, three Minor Arcana cards for its decans and, in modern practice, a court card.
All twelve signs with their dates and cards are listed on the zodiac tarot cards page, and the zodiac tarot card calculator finds yours from your birthday. This guide covers why the system works the way it does.
How the Golden Dawn matched signs to cards
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a British occult society founded in 1888, matched the 22 Major Arcana to the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Each letter already carried an astrological meaning in an old Jewish mystical text, the Sefer Yetzirah: twelve letters for the signs, seven for the planets and three for the elements. Match a card to a letter and you’ve matched it to astrology too.
Many of the pairs make sense at a glance. Aries, the first sign and a natural leader, gets the Emperor on his throne. Steady, earthy Taurus gets the Hierophant, keeper of tradition. Careful, inward-looking Virgo gets the Hermit with his lantern. Capricorn the goat matches the horned Devil and its themes of ambition and material ties. Dreamy, watery Pisces gets the Moon’s twilit path between two towers. Pamela Colman Smith and Arthur Edward Waite drew on the same scheme for the Rider-Waite-Smith deck in 1909, so some images carry the sign openly: rams’ heads are carved on the Emperor’s throne for Aries, and Strength tames a lion for Leo.
Other pairs need a second look. Scorpio as Death reflects the sign’s link with endings, depth and renewal, not literal death. Sagittarius as Temperance links the archer’s aim with the angel’s careful mixing of fire and water.
To keep Leo and Libra in zodiac order, the Golden Dawn swapped the old positions of Strength and Justice. So Rider-Waite-Smith decks put Strength at 8. The full story is in Strength 8 or Justice 11.
Planet cards: your sign’s ruler in tarot
Seven Major Arcana cards belong to the seven classical planets, the ones visible without a telescope.
| Planet | Major Arcana card | Signs it rules (traditional) |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury | 1 The Magician | Gemini, Virgo |
| Moon | 2 The High Priestess | Cancer |
| Venus | 3 The Empress | Taurus, Libra |
| Jupiter | 10 Wheel of Fortune | Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Mars | 16 The Tower | Aries, Scorpio |
| Sun | 19 The Sun | Leo |
| Saturn | 21 The World | Capricorn, Aquarius |
Some later writers give Uranus to the Fool, Neptune to the Hanged Man and Pluto to Judgement. Those are modern additions. If you follow modern rulers, Aquarius picks up the Fool, Pisces the Hanged Man and Scorpio Judgement as extra planet cards.
Putting the sign card and planet card side by side often explains a sign. Aries has the Emperor (structure and command) and the Tower (Mars as sudden force): two sides of the same fiery drive.
Element cards and your sign’s suit
The last three Major Arcana belong to the elements:
| Element | Major Arcana card | Minor Arcana suit | Signs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air | 0 The Fool | Swords | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius |
| Water | 12 The Hanged Man | Cups | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces |
| Fire | 20 Judgement | Wands | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius |
| Earth | none in the original system | Pentacles | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn |
Earth has no element card because the Sefer Yetzirah names only three “mother letters,” for air, water and fire. Some later systems give Earth to the World, which already carries Saturn. Your sign’s suit is a quick way to see which part of the Minor Arcana speaks most to you: Wands for drive, Cups for feeling, Swords for thought and Pentacles for practical life.
How the Minor Arcana are split across the signs
Each sign covers 30 degrees of the zodiac and splits into three decans of ten degrees, about ten days each. The Golden Dawn gave the 36 numbered cards from 2 to 10 to the 36 decans, using the suit of the sign’s element. The cardinal sign of each element takes cards 2 to 4, the fixed sign 5 to 7, and the mutable sign 8 to 10. Each decan also has a planetary ruler, in the old Chaldean order (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon), starting with Mars at the beginning of Aries.
So Aries runs 2, 3 and 4 of Wands, Taurus 5, 6 and 7 of Pentacles, and Gemini 8, 9 and 10 of Swords, and the pattern repeats through the year. The full list of all 36 decan cards, with the dates each one covers, lives in the tarot timing chart.
The decans help explain some card meanings. The Three of Swords, the heartbreak card, is Saturn in Libra: harmony meeting a hard limit. The Nine of Cups, the “wish card,” is Jupiter in Pisces, where the planet of plenty meets the most emotional sign.
The Aces aren’t tied to a decan. The Golden Dawn treated them as the raw root of each element.
How the court cards map to the zodiac
The original Golden Dawn system gave each King, Queen and Knight a span that straddles two signs, from the last decan of one to the end of the second decan of the next. That’s hard to use, so most modern readers follow a simpler shortcut based on each sign’s mode: Queens for cardinal signs, Kings for fixed signs and Knights for mutable signs. Pages have no sign and stand for their element alone.
| Sign | Court card | Sign | Court card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Queen of Wands | Libra | Queen of Swords |
| Taurus | King of Pentacles | Scorpio | King of Cups |
| Gemini | Knight of Swords | Sagittarius | Knight of Wands |
| Cancer | Queen of Cups | Capricorn | Queen of Pentacles |
| Leo | King of Wands | Aquarius | King of Swords |
| Virgo | Knight of Pentacles | Pisces | Knight of Cups |
You’ll see other versions online, because decks disagree on how the Golden Dawn’s court titles map onto Rider-Waite-Smith’s. If you’d rather find a court card from your personality than your birthday, try the court card quiz.
Worked example: four zodiac cards for one birthday
Take someone born on March 15, 1990.
- Sign card. The Sun is in Pisces, so the main card is 18, the Moon: intuition, dreams and comfort with uncertainty.
- Planet card. Pisces is traditionally ruled by Jupiter, card 10, the Wheel of Fortune: luck, cycles and big turns.
- Decan card. March 15 falls in Pisces’ third decan (about March 11 to 20), ruled by Mars, which gives the Ten of Cups: emotional fulfillment shared with others.
- Court card. Pisces is mutable water, so the shortcut gives the Knight of Cups, the romantic idealist.
The same date also gives an arcana number of 10, the Wheel of Fortune, through a completely different route: 0 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10. When an astrological card and a numerological card coincide like this, give that card extra attention. When they differ, read them as layers: the zodiac cards for temperament, the arcana number for a life theme.
You can use these links in everyday readings too. If the Emperor turns up, you might think of an Aries person or the Aries season. Knowing the Hermit is Virgo helps explain its careful, detail-minded tone.
Other zodiac tarot systems
The Golden Dawn system is the most common, but not the only one. Some French occult traditions and some modern decks use different matches, and Aleister Crowley’s Thoth deck renamed several cards while keeping most of the astrology. If another source gives you a different card for your sign, check which system it follows.
Frequently asked questions
I was born on a cusp. Which zodiac tarot card is mine?
Use your actual sun sign, the sign the Sun was in when you were born. The changeover dates shift by a day or so from year to year, so if your birthday falls on a boundary, a birth chart made with your birth time will settle it. Many readers also look at the neighboring sign's card as a secondary influence.
Can I use my moon or rising sign card too?
Yes. Many readers look up the cards for their sun, moon and rising signs and read them as three layers: your core self, your emotional life and the way you come across to others. The correspondences work the same for any placement. You need your birth time and place to know your rising sign, so the sun sign card is the easiest place to start.
Is my zodiac tarot card the same as my birth card?
Usually not. Your zodiac card comes from your sun sign, while your tarot birth cards come from adding up the numbers of your birth date. Now and then they match, and readers take that as a strong personal theme. Most people get two different cards and read them side by side, one for temperament and one for life lessons.
Does Ophiuchus have a tarot card?
No. The Golden Dawn system, which most tarot decks follow, is built on twelve signs matched to twelve Hebrew letters, so there's no letter or card left for a thirteenth sign. Some modern writers assign Ophiuchus a card of their own choosing, but there's no agreed tradition. If you were born in its dates, use your usual sun sign card, which for most people is Sagittarius.
I use sidereal astrology. Does my tarot card change?
The card for each sign stays the same, but your sign may not. Sidereal dates run roughly three to four weeks later than the usual tropical dates, so someone who is an Aries in tropical astrology is often a Pisces in sidereal. Look up the card for whichever sign your own system gives you.
