Arcana calculator
Enter your date of birth to find your personal arcana: the one Major Arcana card your birthday adds up to. It’s free, you see every step of the sum, and you get what your card means for you.
How your arcana is calculated
It takes three steps and a pen. The example below uses a birthday of March 15, 1990, so you can follow along and check your own result by hand. For leap days, The Fool and other tricky cases, see how to calculate your arcana number.
Write your birth date as eight digits
Month, day, then the full year. Add a zero to single-digit months and days, so March is 03. Some sites write the day first; the order doesn’t change the total.
03·15·1990
Add all the digits
Add all eight digits together. If the total is more than 22, add its two digits. Once is always enough: no birth date adds up to more than 48.
- 0 + 3 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 28
- 28 → 2 + 8 = 10
Find your card
Find your number among the 22 Major Arcana: 1 is The Magician, 21 is The World, and 22 is The Fool (printed as 0 on the card).
- 10 → Wheel of Fortune

What is an arcana calculator?
An arcana calculator turns your date of birth into one of the 22 Major Arcana cards of the tarot. That card is your arcana number, also called your personal arcana or birth arcana. It is a fixed card: your birthday never changes, so neither does it.
People use it the way they use a sun sign. It gives you a short description of your temperament, a strength to lean on, a habit to watch, and one card to pay attention to when it appears in a reading. You can do the sum yourself in under a minute. The calculator does it instantly and shows each step so you can check it.
Why your arcana is always a Major Arcana card
Arcana is the plural of the Latin arcanum, a secret or hidden thing. Tarot borrowed the word for its two groups of cards:
- The Major Arcana are 22 named cards, from The Fool (0) to The World (21). They describe big life themes such as love, change, loss, courage and completion. See all 22 Major Arcana.
- The Minor Arcana are 56 cards in four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords and Pentacles), each with Ace to Ten plus four court cards. They describe everyday situations.
When someone asks “what is my arcana?”, they mean the Major Arcana card that matches their birth date. Birth-date calculators only ever give a Major Arcana card, because there are 22 of them and a birth date can always be reduced to a number from 1 to 22.
Is arcana the same as tarot?
Tarot is the whole 78-card deck and the practice of reading it. The arcana are the two halves of that deck. So your arcana card is a tarot card, but “tarot” covers far more than your arcana: spreads, reversals, the Minor Arcana and the rest. You don’t need to own a deck to know your arcana.
Arcana number vs birth card vs life path number
Three numbers come from the same birth date, and they are easy to mix up. This table works all three out for March 15, 1990:
| Number | How it’s worked out | Mar 15, 1990 | Read through |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcana number | Add all eight digits; stop at 22 or less | 28 → 10 | Wheel of Fortune |
| Tarot birth cards | Month + day + year as whole numbers (Greer) | 2008 → 10 → 1 | Wheel of Fortune and The Magician |
| Life path number | Reduce to 1–9 (keep 11, 22, 33) | 1 | Numerology meaning of 1 |
The top cards can differ, but the root never does. Your arcana 10 reduces to 1 (1 + 0), and so do the birth cards and the life path. Tarot readers call the cards that share a root a constellation.
Why other arcana calculators show a different card
If you’ve tried a few sites and got different answers, none of them is necessarily wrong. They use different methods:
| Method | How it adds | Mar 15, 1990 | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digit sum (this page) | All eight digits | 28 → 10 | Arcana number on this page and most arcana sites |
| Greer whole-number | 3 + 15 + 1990 | 2008 → 10 → 1 | Personality and soul cards |
| Four-part | 3 + 15 + 19 + 90 | 127 → 10 | Some tarot books and apps |
Every method keeps the same root, so your card stays in the same family even when the top card changes. Your result lists every method for your own date. Numbering also trips people up: older Marseille decks put Justice at 8 and Strength at 11, the reverse of most modern decks (Strength 8 or Justice 11). This site uses the Rider-Waite-Smith order, Strength 8 and Justice 11, and counts The Fool as 22 (The Fool: 0 or 22).
How to use your arcana number
- Read it as a description, not a forecast. Note which strengths sound like you and which don’t. Both answers tell you something.
- Journal on it for a week. Each result comes with a prompt. Write a few lines a day and look for the pattern at the end of the week.
- Watch for your card in readings. If your arcana turns up in a spread, many readers treat it as a sign the question touches something central for you.
- Add the timing layer. Your year card shows the theme of the current year, and your month cards break it down.
- If you want more detail, the destiny matrix uses the same 22 cards, read as matrix energies, to map talents, money, relationships and your karmic tail on one chart.

How many arcana cards are there?
A tarot deck has 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. An arcana calculator only ever gives you one of the 22 Major Arcana, because a birth date always reduces to a number from 1 to 22. The Minor Arcana come in when you add your name: that gives you a companion card from the four suits.
Is The Fool 0 or 22?
Both, depending on how you count. The Fool is printed as 0 on the card, but a birth-date sum can never reach 0, so arcana calculators treat a total of 22 as The Fool. If your sum lands on exactly 22, your arcana is The Fool. The Fool 0 or 22 guide explains the history.
Is my name required?
No. Your arcana comes from your birth date alone. The name box is optional: fill it in and you also get a companion Minor Arcana card and three name numbers (expression, soul urge and personality). Leave it empty and nothing about your arcana changes.
Can I calculate someone else’s arcana?
Yes. Enter their birth date the same way you would your own. It works for partners, friends, children and fictional characters. To compare two people directly, use the arcana compatibility calculator, which adds both numbers into a couple card.
Which arcana numbers are the most and least common?
Across birth dates from 1940 to 2015, each card from 5 (The Hierophant) to 11 (Justice) turns up for about 9% of people. Totals from 23 to 48 fold back into 3 to 12, so most birthdays land on those cards. Cards 13 to 22 can only come from a total that lands on them directly, and Death (13) is the rarest at about 1.5%.
Why can’t my arcana be The Magician or The High Priestess?
No birth date between 1900 and 2099 adds up to 1 or 2, and folding a bigger total back always gives 3 or more. So arcana 1 and 2 never come up as an arcana number. Both cards still appear as tarot birth cards: The Magician is the soul card for totals of 10 and 19, The High Priestess for 11 and 20.
Do my birth time or birthplace matter?
No. The arcana number uses only the calendar date, so everyone born on the same day shares it, twins included. If you were born close to midnight, use the date on your birth certificate. Time and place matter in astrology, not in this sum.
Is an arcana calculator accurate?
The arithmetic is exact, and you can check every line of it in your result. What varies is the method: this page uses the digit sum, and the methods section shows how other approaches differ. The meaning of the card is interpretation, so read it as a prompt for reflection.
Is my birth date stored?
No. The sum runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent to us. The date is saved only in the page address after the # sign, which stays on your device unless you copy and share the link yourself.
