To read a destiny matrix chart, you calculate four corner numbers from your birth date, add them to get the center, then read each point by its position: the center first, then the corners, the karmic tail, the purposes, and the money and love lines. Every number is a Major Arcana card from 1 to 22, and every point has a fixed formula you can check by hand.

If you’d rather have the numbers in front of you first, run your date through the destiny matrix calculator. It prints every sum, so you can follow along.

What the destiny matrix chart shows

The destiny matrix (also called the Matrix of Destiny or the 22 Arcana method) was developed by the Russian numerologist Natalia Ladini in the 2000s. It combines tarot numerology, where a number maps to one of the 22 Major Arcana, with a geometric diagram where each position has a fixed meaning.

The method uses only the calendar date, so it needs no birth time or place. That is its appeal and its limit. Everyone born on March 15, 1990 has the same chart, so readers treat it as a set of recurring themes, gifts and lessons, not a forecast of events. If the card numbers are new to you, start with what arcana means and the Major Arcana in order.

The two rules behind every number

Rule 1: reduce anything above 22

Every point is a number from 1 to 22. When a sum is greater than 22, replace it with the sum of its digits, and repeat if needed. So 47 becomes 4 + 7 = 11, and 30 becomes 3. A result of exactly 22 stays 22.

Rule 2: Marseille numbering, with the Fool as 22

The matrix follows the Tarot de Marseille order, not Rider-Waite-Smith. The two orders differ in three places:

Number In the destiny matrix In Rider-Waite-Smith decks
8 Justice Strength
11 Strength Justice
22 The Fool The Fool (printed as 0)

So when your chart shows 11, read the matrix meaning at Arcana 11, which is Strength. The background is in Strength 8 or Justice 11 and the Fool: 0 or 22.

How is the chart laid out?

The chart is two squares laid over each other, forming an eight-pointed star inside an octagon.

  • The straight square holds your personal points: A on the left, B at the top, C on the right and D at the bottom.
  • The diagonal square holds the ancestral points: F (top left), G (top right), H (bottom right) and I (bottom left).
  • E sits in the center, where every line crosses.

A line runs from each outer point to E. The inner points on it take the outer letter plus a number: A2 sits next to the center, A1 between A and A2. The vertical B to D line is the sky line, the horizontal A to C line the earth line, F to H the father’s line and G to I the mother’s line.

Zone names you’ll see on other sites

Calculators use different labels for the same points, which is a big source of confusion. This table maps them.

Zone Points Other names for it
Comfort zone E Center, inner self, character
Portrait A Outer self, personal qualities, first impression
Talents B, B1, B2 Gifts, talents from above
Material point C Material karma, the year’s lesson
Karmic tail D2, D1, D Past-life program, karmic task
Money channel C2 and the shared point Money line, financial channel
Love line D2 and the shared point Relationship channel, love channel
Ancestral square F, G, H, I Family square, generational lines
Purposes Sky, earth and four purpose points Destinations, life tasks
Age map The outer ring Life cycles, year forecast
Health chart Seven rows of paired points Chakra map

How do you calculate each point?

The four corners and the center

Point Position Formula
A Left Day of birth, reduced if over 22
B Top Month of birth (1 to 12)
C Right Sum of the year’s four digits, reduced
D Bottom A + B + C, reduced
E Center A + B + C + D, reduced

Days 23 to 31 reduce: the 23rd becomes 5, the 29th becomes 11 and the 31st becomes 4.

The ancestral square

F = A + B, G = B + C, H = C + D and I = D + A, each reduced.

The inner points

For any outer point X:

  • X2 = X + E (the point next to the center)
  • X1 = X + X2 (the point between X and X2)

The health chart also uses A3 = A2 + E and B3 = B2 + E, which sit closest to the center.

Karmic tail, money channel and love line

  • Karmic tail: D2, D1, D, written with dashes, such as 21-4-10. Only 26 tails can occur. The karmic tail guide explains why and lists them all.
  • Shared point (S): C2 + D2.
  • Money channel: C2, then C2 + S, then S. See the money channel guide.
  • Love line: D2, then D2 + S, then S. See the love line guide.

The purpose points

Point Formula Common reading
Sky B + D Inner, spiritual side of personal purpose
Earth A + C Practical, material side of personal purpose
Personal purpose Sky + Earth Themes stressed in early adult life, up to about 40
Father line / mother line F + H / G + I What comes down each side of the family
Social purpose Father + mother line Themes stressed from about 40 to 60
Spiritual purpose Personal + social The synthesis, often linked with later life
Planetary purpose Social + spiritual Your contribution beyond family and community

The age brackets are conventions within the school, not hard boundaries.

Worked example: March 15, 1990

Every point below follows the rules above. Card names use Marseille numbering.

Corners and center

  • A = 15 (the day): the Devil
  • B = 3 (March): the Empress
  • C = 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19: the Sun
  • D = 15 + 3 + 19 = 37 → 3 + 7 = 10: the Wheel of Fortune
  • E = 15 + 3 + 19 + 10 = 47 → 4 + 7 = 11: Strength

Ancestral square

  • F = 15 + 3 = 18, the Moon
  • G = 3 + 19 = 22, the Fool
  • H = 19 + 10 = 29 → 11, Strength
  • I = 10 + 15 = 25 → 7, the Chariot

Inner points

Line X X1 X2
A 15 5 (15 + 8 = 23 → 5) 8 (15 + 11 = 26 → 8)
B 3 17 (3 + 14) 14 (3 + 11)
C 19 22 (19 + 3) 3 (19 + 11 = 30 → 3)
D 10 4 (10 + 21 = 31 → 4) 21 (10 + 11)

A3 = 8 + 11 = 19, and B3 = 14 + 11 = 25 → 7.

Tail, money, love and purposes

  • Karmic tail: D2, D1, D = 21-4-10 (the World, the Emperor, the Wheel). Its page is 21-4-10.
  • Shared point: 3 + 21 = 24 → 6, the Lovers.
  • Money channel: 3, then 3 + 6 = 9, then 6. Written 3 · 9 · 6.
  • Love line: 21, then 21 + 6 = 27 → 9, then 6. Written 21 · 9 · 6.
  • Sky = 3 + 10 = 13. Earth = 15 + 19 = 34 → 7. Personal purpose = 13 + 7 = 20.
  • Father line = 18 + 11 = 29 → 11. Mother line = 22 + 7 = 29 → 11. Social purpose = 11 + 11 = 22.
  • Spiritual purpose = 20 + 22 = 42 → 6. Planetary purpose = 22 + 6 = 28 → 10.

The whole chart at a glance

Point Number Card (Marseille)
A / B / C / D 15 / 3 / 19 / 10 Devil / Empress / Sun / Wheel
E 11 Strength
F / G / H / I 18 / 22 / 11 / 7 Moon / Fool / Strength / Chariot
Karmic tail 21-4-10 World, Emperor, Wheel
Money channel 3 · 9 · 6 Empress, Hermit, Lovers
Love line 21 · 9 · 6 World, Hermit, Lovers
Personal / social / spiritual / planetary 20 / 22 / 6 / 10 Judgement / Fool / Lovers / Wheel

Notice that 11 appears four times (E, H, the father line and the mother line), and 10 and 6 twice each. A number that repeats across positions is a main thread of the chart.

What order should you read the chart in?

Reading 40 points as a list produces noise. This sequence builds the picture from the middle out. Keep the matrix number pages open as you go, for example Arcana 15, Arcana 3 and Arcana 19.

  1. Center (E). Your comfort zone, the state you return to when nothing is pushing you. Every inner point is built from it, so it colors the whole chart. In the example, 11 points to steady willpower and self-control.
  2. A and B. A is your portrait, how people first see you. B is your talent point. Here the Devil and the Empress pair magnetism and intensity with warmth and creativity.
  3. C. The material point: work, resources and what the year of birth brings. The Sun points to visibility and warmth as natural assets.
  4. D and the karmic tail. D names the key lesson, and the tail (21-4-10) tells the story behind it: freedom meeting a need for control, with a lesson about accepting change.
  5. Purposes. Personal, social, spiritual and planetary give a sense of direction across a lifetime.
  6. Money channel and love line together. They share their last card. Here both end in 6, so value-led choices link work and relationships.
  7. Ancestral square and family lines. Strengths and patterns that come down the family. Two 11s here put endurance on both sides.
  8. Ages. The period you’re living now (see below).
  9. Health chart. If you use it, read it as a self-care map, never as diagnosis. The health chart guide covers it.

Read both sides of every card

Matrix readers describe each arcana as having a “plus” and a “minus” expression. The same 15 can be charisma and healthy desire, or compulsion and control. The chart names the card, and you decide which version you’re living. A useful habit is two short lists for each main point: how this card looks when you’re at your best, and how it looks when you’re stressed.

How do ages work on the chart?

The outer octagon doubles as a timeline from 0 to 80. Start at A and move clockwise, ten years per point:

Age 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70
Point A F B G C H D I
March 15, 1990 15 18 3 22 19 11 10 7

Between two ten-year points, the five-year midpoint is the sum of both ends, reduced. Quarter points add the midpoint to each neighbor. For the example, age 5 is 15 + 18 = 33 → 6, age 2.5 is 15 + 6 = 21, and age 7.5 is 6 + 18 = 24 → 6. Our calculator repeats the halving once more, so it shows a value for every 1.25 years.

The other five-year midpoints for this date are 21 at 15, 7 at 25, 5 at 35, 3 at 45, 21 at 55, 17 at 65 and 22 at 75. Treat an age card as the theme of a period. The year forecast guide shows how to turn this into a yearly and monthly reading.

Why does my chart look different on another site?

If another calculator gives different numbers, check these in order:

  • The Fool as 0 or 22. A tool that adds 0 for the Fool instead of 22 changes every point built from it.
  • Reducing the year too far. The method adds the year’s digits and reduces only if the total is over 22, so 1990 gives 19, not 1.
  • Subtracting 22 instead of adding digits. Some schools turn 29 into 7 (29 − 22) rather than 11 (2 + 9). Results drift from there. Our guide to calculator differences compares the two rules.
  • Different point definitions. Some sites build the money line or love line from other points, or read the karmic tail in the opposite order (10-4-21 instead of 21-4-10).
  • A day that wasn’t reduced. The 29th must become 11. A tool that uses 29 directly is broken.

If your four corners and center match, the core reading is the same. Differences further out are about labels and school, not about your birth date.

Mistakes to avoid when you calculate by hand

  • Forgetting to reduce D or E. Both are almost always over 22 before reduction.
  • Building inner points from an unreduced center. Reduce E first.
  • Reading 8 and 11 with Rider-Waite-Smith meanings.
  • Treating an age card as a prediction for a specific year.

Once you’ve checked your corners, the destiny matrix calculator fills in every other point, and the karmic tail calculator gives the tail on its own. To compare two charts, the compatibility guide explains how a couple’s matrix is built. Curious how a single arcana number relates to the full chart? How to calculate your arcana number shows that March 15, 1990 gives 10, the Wheel of Fortune, which is also this chart’s D point.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my birth time to make a destiny matrix chart?

No. The destiny matrix uses only the day, month and year of birth. There is no birth time, place or rising sign in the method. So everyone born on the same date shares an identical chart, and why readers treat it as a map of themes to reflect on rather than a fixed script for one person's life.

Is the destiny matrix the same as the Pythagorean square?

No. Both are popular in Russian-speaking numerology, but the Pythagorean square (also called the psychomatrix) is a three-by-three grid that counts how often each digit from 1 to 9 appears in your birth date. The destiny matrix works with the 22 Major Arcana and places them on an octagon. They answer different questions and are read separately.

Is the destiny matrix based on astrology?

No. It uses only arithmetic on your birth date and the meanings of the 22 Major Arcana. There are no planets, houses or birth times involved. Some readers like to set a matrix beside an astrology chart and compare themes, but neither system depends on the other, and you can read a matrix with no astrology knowledge at all.

Can I use a Thoth deck with the destiny matrix?

Yes. The numbers work the same way, and only some card names change. In the Thoth deck, 8 is Adjustment (Justice) and 11 is Lust (Strength), which already matches the Marseille numbering the matrix uses. Read the meanings from the matrix tradition and use the Thoth images as a visual aid if you like them.

How long does it take to read a full destiny matrix?

A first pass through the center, the four corners and the karmic tail takes about 20 minutes with the card meanings open beside you. A full reading that adds purposes, money, love, ancestral lines and ages usually takes an hour or two. Many people read one zone per sitting and come back to the chart over several weeks.
