Birth cards 21 / 3

The World & The Empress

If your tarot birth cards are the World and the Empress, your personality card is 21 and your soul card is 3. The World is how you come across: capable, worldly and someone who finishes things. The Empress is the purpose underneath: growing, nurturing and making. Whatever people with this pair touch tends to grow and then get completed. The question running through the pair is what you are creating, and when it is finished enough to share. Under Greer's method, only people born in 1990 or earlier have it.

How you get this pair

Add the month, day and full year, then add the digits. For January 1, 1990: 1 + 1 + 1990 = 1992, and 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, the World, your personality card. Then 2 + 1 = 3 gives the Empress, your soul card.

From 1991 onward, month, day and year totals no longer add up to 21, and they will not again for a long time.

If you only know your birthday, work out your birth cards first. The method we use is Mary K. Greer’s.

How the cards work together

The World shows a dancing figure inside an oval wreath, a wand in each hand, with four winged creatures in the corners. It is the last card of the Major Arcana: arrival, integration and being at home in the wider world. The Empress sits on cushions in a field of ripe wheat beside a stream, crowned with stars. She stands for fertility, nourishment, the senses and the slow work of growth.

With the World as your personality, you may seem accomplished and broad-minded, comfortable in many settings. Travel, other cultures, or pulling many threads of a project together may come easily. People often see you as someone who gets things done. The Empress soul gives that competence its heart. Your deeper purpose involves creating and caring for something, such as a family, a home, a garden, a body of work or a community.

The pair runs as a cycle: the Empress grows things and the World completes them, then a new season begins. Out of balance, the World gets impatient with the Empress's slow pace, or the Empress keeps tending something long after it is ready to leave the nest.

The World & The Empress in love

You tend to be affectionate, sensual and devoted. The Empress shows love through care, food, touch and a beautiful home; the World brings maturity and a wish for a relationship that feels whole. You may want a partner who shares your wider interests, such as travel or culture, and who keeps growing alongside you.

Be careful not to turn a partner into a project to nurture or perfect. Love thrives when both people feel equally cared for, and when the relationship keeps developing after commitment instead of being treated as finished.

The World & The Empress at work

Work that combines making with finishing suits you: project management, design, architecture, publishing, events, hospitality, international work, horticulture, the arts, education and healthcare. The World enjoys roles with a wide reach; the Empress wants to watch something grow under its care. Running your own business or leading a creative team often fits well.

The caution is a slump after a big project ends. Plan the next creative season before the current one closes, and leave a real rest between them.

Hidden factor cards

Your constellation is 3-12-21, and the member you do not hold is the Hanged Man (12). In Greer's framework this hidden factor card is a quality you tend to meet through experience before you claim it. For World and Empress people, the Hanged Man teaches patience and a change of angle, and it often appears as delays that reshape a plan for the better. It reminds a completion-minded temperament that pauses are productive. See The Hanged Man and the 3-12-21 constellation it belongs to.

Growing with this pair

Name the stage each of your projects is in: planting, growing, harvesting or resting. That helps the World wait for the right moment and helps the Empress know when to let go.

Mark your endings. After finishing something, celebrate it before starting the next thing, so completion feels satisfying instead of empty. And welcome the hidden Hanged Man by treating delays as information: ask what a pause is showing you before you push through it. The guide to working with your birth card offers more exercises.

Questions to journal on

  1. What am I growing right now, and what stage is it in?
  2. What have I finished recently, and did I let myself celebrate it?
  3. Where am I holding on to something I have finished nurturing?
  4. What might a current delay be trying to show me?

Frequently asked questions

Why do other calculators give me the Hanged Man and the Empress?

Some sites add month, day and the two halves of the year. Across every date from 1900 to 2030, that method never returns 21 for people Greer places at the World. It gives 12 about three times in four and 3 otherwise. January 1, 1990 gives 1 + 1 + 19 + 90 = 111, which reduces to 3. See why birth card results vary between sites.

Can anyone born after 1990 have the World as a birth card?

Not under Greer's method. A personality of 21 needs a total whose digits add to 21, such as 1992. From 1991, totals start at 1993, and the next total with a digit sum of 21 is 2199. Younger people can reach the World through the full-date arcana calculator, which adds all eight digits of the date.
