How the card of the year is worked out

Add the four digits of the year. For 2026: 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, the Wheel of Fortune. If the total were above 22 you would add its digits again, though no year this century gets that high. The years of this decade add up to small numbers, so the card climbs one step a year until Death in 2029, then drops to The Hierophant in 2030, when the last digit rolls over (2 + 0 + 3 + 0 = 5). This site numbers the cards the Rider-Waite-Smith way, so 8 is Strength and 11 is Justice; the methodology page lists every formula.

Collective card or personal card?

The collective card is the same for everyone, so readers use it for the general mood of a year: the kind of changes that seem to be in the air. Your personal year card adds your birthday (month + day + year) and describes how the year plays out in your own life. A Justice year for the world can still be a Temperance year for you. Most readers look at both and let the personal card lead.

From 2000 to 2099 the digit totals run from 2 (the year 2000) to 20 (2099), so The Magician (1), The World (21) and The Fool (0, counted as 22) can’t be the collective card this century. Judgement, in 2099, is the highest any year reaches.
